This is the kind of ‘review’ I love to bring to you dSLR Dads. Michael Reichmann has posted his detailed insight into the Nikon D3 and Nikon D300 over at the Luminous Landscape. What makes this article completely different and refreshing from all of the others is the focus on how these cameras compare from the Canon perspective. He also makes it perfectly clear that this is not a typical test report with an abundance of side-by-side comparisons at ISO 3200 with 100% crops. That really doesn’t matter. What does matter is how does a photographer use these new tools for photography.

In this essay I look at the new Nikon D3 and D300 though the eyes (mine) of someone who has been shooting with Canon cameras for the past 8 years. Prior to 1999 I used Nikons, shoot film, and used them to make a living in photography for some 30 years. I also used (and still do) Hasselblads and Leicas, and as a magazine reviewer have probably tested and shot with almost every major camera system available since the mid-1960’s. Ok, there are two ways for a dSLR Dad to look at it, but either way, this is a great deal. Amazon has the Canon EOS 5D with EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens for $2606! That’s even $250 less than B&H Photo!

So let’s break this down. The Canon EOS 5D dSLR body currently costs $2155. However, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens costs $990. So this means that this 12 MegaPixel, Full-Frame dSLR package has a value of $538! That makes this (more…)

What’s that I hear? The sound of Canon 7D rumors getting stronger??

Canon has lowered the price on the EOS 5D
to spur demand throughout it’s life cycle, but never this low before. It looks like the traditional retail price is around $2500 and the new street price (at reputable dealers) is down to $2299.

You can also grab the Canon EOS 5D with EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens
package for $3099. That works out to a 25% discount on one of the sharpest lens’ that Canon makes.
