Nikon Updates Capture NX 2 Software to Version 2.2.4

Nikon has updated has released a software update for Capture NX, version 2.2.4. This software update is currently available in a Windows version only. The following are listed as new for this update:

Compatibility with 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 Home Basic/ Home Premium/ Professional/ Enterprise/ Ultimate has been added.  When run under 64-bit versions, the software operates as a 32-bit application.

Compatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows Vista Home Basic/ Home Premium/ Business/ Enterprise/ Ultimate (Service Pack 2) editions has been added. When run under 64-bit versions, the software operates as a 32-bit application.

Specifications have been modified so that when 25 Photos on Page, or a higher number of photos per page, is selected for Select Layout in the Print layout dialog, the Use Thumbnail Data (Draft Use Only) box is automatically checked.
This resolves an issue that prevented printing when 25 Photos on Page, or a higher number of photos per page, was selected for Select Layout.

An issue that caused an error message to be displayed and prevented printing when borderless settings were applied with some printers has been resolved.

An issue that prevented accurate application of borderless print settings has been resolved.

An issue that prevented specification of the same margin for left, right, top, and bottom margins in the Margins section of the Page Setup dialog has been resolved.

An issue that caused a delay between clicking of the Print button and actual initiation of printing has been resolved.

When an image was opened on some computers with AMD CPUs, Capture NX 2 quit unexpectedly. This issue has been resolved.

An issue that caused an error message to be displayed during batch processing of a large number of files has been resolved.

When a batch process was run with the Notify when completed box in the Processing Queue – Process Running dialog checked, a blank window was displayed. This issue has been resolved.

When a batch process was run for multiple images with the same shooting date and time, the processed images were not saved with the correct file names.  This issue has been resolved.

An issue that caused batch processing to fail before completion when a batch process was run with certain settings has been resolved.

An issue that caused an error message to be displayed when multiple enhancements were applied to images has been resolved.

An issue that caused an error message to be displayed when attempting to open several images previously saved with Capture NX 2 has been resolved.

When the Camera & Lens Corrections checkbox was checked (Develop section of Edit List), enhancements were not applied to an image opened in the image window and displayed at 100%, and the enhanced image could not be saved. This issue has been resolved.

When image window display was maximized with Desktop selected for Window menu>Workspaces>Additional Screen for the primary monitor on a dual monitor system, the image window disappeared. This issue has been resolved.

When the zoom tool was used to enlarge an image displayed with Full Screen or Presentation selected from the View menu, the portion of the image clicked with the zoom tool was not displayed at the center of the window. This issue has been resolved.

An issue that prevented switching between “+” and “-“ operations when the ALT key was pressed while using the selection brush has been resolved.

An issue that caused folders in the Capture NX 2 Folders palette to be displayed in a different order than with Windows Explorer display has been resolved.

When the crop tool was used to select a crop and the ENTER key pressed to apply the crop, the cursor did not switch to a selection tool.  This issue has been resolved.

When a number was entered after a decimal point for some enhancement items with text boxes for entering numerical values in the Edit List, the values could not be changed.  This issue has been resolved.

When “-” (minus) was entered in the Exposure Compensation text box under Quick Fix in the Develop section of the Edit List, it was displayed in red and then “0” was displayed after a few seconds. This issue has been resolved.

Mac OS X 10.5.7 Adds Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Support

Apple Computer has released a software update for Mac OS X Leopard, which includes additional RAW image support for several third-party cameras. This update actually incorporates the last few Digital RAW Compatibility updates released by Apple into the OS. The following dSLR cameras are now supported by Mac OS X 10.5.7:

Apple Releases Aperture 2.1.3 Update

Apple has released a software update for Aperture 2, version 2.1.3. This update reportedly improves overall stability and provides fixes for issues related to the integrity of the Aperture Library database and compatibility with specific file types. The update is recommended for all Aperture 2 users. The following are listed as new for this update:

Image Compatibility

Nikon images imported using a direct camera-to-computer connection now display thumbnails correctly in the Import window.

Aperture Library

Fixes an issue that could cause unwanted duplicate image versions to be created after rebuilding a library or after importing projects. These duplicate versions appear in the Browser as gray boxes or square thumbnails and show a Pixel Size of "0 x 0" in the Metadata panel. The word "(null)" may appear in the name of these versions. If your Aperture Library contains these duplicate versions, you may be able to eliminate them by rebuilding your library after updating to Aperture 2.1.3. To rebuild an Aperture Library, hold down the Option and Command keys while opening Aperture, then click the Rebuild Now button. If rebuilding the Aperture Library does not remove these unwanted duplicate versions, you can manually delete them.

Addresses a library issue that prevented the operation of the Relocate and Consolidate commands in some circumstances. This situation could occur if you renamed images using the Relocate Masters command, and then subsequently rebuilt your Aperture Library. If you are unable to Relocate or Consolidate Masters, you may be able to remedy the issue by rebuilding your Aperture Library using Aperture 2.1.3, as described in the previous paragraph.

Adobe Camera Raw 5.3 Download Now Available

Adobe has released downloads of Camera RAW version 5.3 (Mac OS and Windows). Support for the following cameras has been added from Camera Raw 5.2 to 5.3:

The Camera Raw 5.3 plug-in is not compatible with versions of Photoshop earlier than Photoshop CS4, versions of Photoshop Elements earlier than Photoshop Elements 6.0, or versions of Adobe Premiere Elements earlier than 4.0.

Apple Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.5

Apple has released version 2.5 of the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility (download here). According to Apple, this update extends RAW file compatibility for Aperture 2, iPhoto ‘08, and iPhoto ‘09 for the following cameras:

Nikon D3X
Epson R-D1x

It also addresses “issues” related to specific cameras and overall stability. And that’s all they have to say about that. You can download the update from Apple here.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.3 Software Update

Adobe has upgraded Photoshop Lightroom to version 2.3. You can download the free updates for both Windows and Macintosh versions from Adobe. Support for the following cameras has been added from Lightroom 2.2 to 2.3:

Further Windows and Macintosh software enhancements in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.3 include:

In the Windows 64-bit version of Lightroom an sFTP upload process could cause Lightroom to crash.
Slideshows could return to the first image randomly during playback.
A memory leak could cause Lightroom to crash while attempting to process files with local adjustments.
Canon EOS 5D Mk II sRAW files could process with artifacts in Lightroom 2.2.
Lightroom 2.2 could cause disc burning to fail for Windows customers.
Attempting to undo(CTRL-Z) a single step in Lightroom 2.2 on Windows could cause a series of previous actions to be undone.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.2 Software Update

Adobe has upgraded Photoshop Lightroom to version 2.2. You can download the free updates for both Windows and Macintosh versions from Adobe.com. Support for the following cameras has been added from Lightroom 2.1 to 2.2:

Camera profiles are now available in the Calibration panel in the Develop module. These profiles are designed to provide different interpretations of raw capture.

A special note in regards to the DNG file handling of certain Panasonic cameras(**):

**With the release of Lightroom 2.2, there is an important exception in our DNG file handling for the Panasonic DMC LX3, Panasonic DMC FX150, Panasonic DMC FZ28, Panasonic DMC-G1 and Leica D-LUX 4. In this release the native, proprietary files from these cameras can only be converted to linear DNG files. A linear DNG file has gone through a demosaic process that converts a single mosaic layer of red, green and blue channel information into three distinct layers , one for each channel. The resulting linear DNG file is approximately three times the size of a mosaic DNG file or the original proprietary file format.

This exception is a temporary solution to ensure that Panasonic and Leica’s intended image rendering from their proprietary raw file format is applied to an image when converted DNG files are viewed in third party software titles. The same image rendering process is applied automatically in Camera Raw 5.2 and in Lightroom 2.2 when viewing the original proprietary raw file format.

In a future release Adobe plans to update the DNG specification to include an option to embed metadata-based representations of the lens compensations in the DNG file, allowing a mosaic DNG conversion. In the interim Adobe recommends only converting these files to DNG to allow compatibility with third party raw converters, previous versions of the Camera Raw plug-in or previous versions of Lightroom.

Canon EOS RAW Codec 1.4 Software for Windows

Canon and has recently released the version 1.4 update to their RAW-format Codec plug-in for Windows Vista and XP. This software plug-in will allow you to view and work with Canon RAW (*.CR2 files) images just like JPEG files. Changes and corrections made from Canon RAW Codec 1.3 include:

Added supported models. EOS 50D, EOS 5D Mark II, and PowerShot G10.
Changes made in the RAW image processing of the EOS DIGITAL products. RAW processing results are now the same as those of Digital Photo Professional.
Supports Microsoft Pro Photo Tools.

Amazon.com says Merry Christmas with a $139.99 Lightroom 2 Deal

Full disclosure, I’m placing my order as I write this post. Amazon.com is selling the full version of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 for just $139.99! I’m not sure how long this deal will last, but a little twitter birdie told me that it may be all weekend. As a dSLR Dad who shoots lots of RAW image files, Lightroom 2 is the perfect tool at managing vast amounts of images, both RAW and JPEG, and intuitively edit single photos or batches of images. It also makes it incredibly easy to create an html or flash slideshow for email or the web. Finally, if you subscribe to Ansel Adam’s view that it’s not a photograph until it is a print, Adobe’s Lightroom 2 has the best print engine in the business (well, at least under $1,000).

You can find Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 on sale this weekend at Amazon.com. If you have never used Lightroom 2 before, may I recommend you pick up Scott Kelby’s The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book for Digital Photographers and/or Mikkel Aaland’s Photoshop Lightroom 2 Adventure: Mastering Adobe’s Next-Generation Tool for Digital Photographers. Two of my favorite authors that will help you develop a solid workflow with good techniques.
