Nikon’s been getting a lot of the press recently, but Canon has new cameras too. The new 40D was announced the same time, but has been shipping since early fall. With that, I present you dSLR Dad’s with all the information you need to justify spending more money.
As a primer, the 40D comes in two flavors:
- Canon EOS 40D (body only, at Amazon or B&H Photo)
- 40D dSLR with the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens (at Amazon or B&H Photo)
12/25/2007 Update: Merry Christmas, the Camera Body Price has dropped $150 to only $1150 at B&H Photo!

The Luminous Landscape – A Hands-On Report
LetsGoDigital – Let’s be honest; the Canon EOS 40D is a D-SLR camera that is about the most complete a camera can be. It is a solid camera, with excellent auto focus, a silent shutter and mirror, a beautiful viewfinder and fine operation…… Outstanding!
photo.net – The crop sensor combined with state-of-the-art systems makes the Canon 40D the best digital SLR body for budget-conscious wildlife photographers. Adding the 6.5 frames per second capture rate makes the 40D the best digital SLR body for sports photographers who don’t want to buy the Canon EOS 1D Mark III. Within the Canon system, the 40D makes sense for people who leave the house on a specifically photographic mission and don’t mind carrying the extra weight and bulk in exchange for the ruggedness and two-wheel user interface.
dPreview – Seven years since the EOS D30, the sixth incarnation of that camera displays all of the advantages of a progressive evolution in both features and quality. With each step up the evolutionary ladder to the EOS 40D Canon has demonstrated improvements in image quality, performance, usability and features. They also demonstrated that as well as meeting the ‘requirements of the market’ they also listened to owners and reviewers by implementing the most commonly requested feature changes.
Bob Atkins – In just about every respect the EOS 40D technically outperforms the EOS 30D and so I think it is a worthwhile upgrade for those who can afford to switch and who can use the new features….. I didn’t just review the 40D, I bought one myself.
Digital Camera Resource Page – It’s hard not to like the Canon EOS-40D. It’s a digital SLR that does just about everything you could possibly want — and it does them all well. While it remains to be seen how it will compare to new offerings from the competition, the 40D is still good enough to recommend without the slightest hesitation.
Photography Blog – The Canon EOS 40D’s strength doesn’t lie in any great technological breakthrough but in its professional appeal and its sheer value for money.
cNet – Great photo quality and excellent continuous-shooting performance are just two of the Canon EOS 40D’s many attractions in the digital camera marketplace.
Consumer Reports - First Impression
Digital Camera Info – The EOS 40D stands as a solid successor to Canon’s popular EOS 30D. It offers increased resolution, 30 percent faster continuous shooting, and enhanced computing power. A number of innovations, such as sRAW files, Live Preview, automatic dust reduction, and additional weather seals, also make their first appearance in the series, collectively creating a more dynamic and contemporized feature set.
