Nikon AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8 ED Nikkor Zoom Lens Review
Posted by: The dSLR Dad in Camera Lens, Reviews This is for all of you wide angle dSLR Dads. Photozone has just reviewed Nikon’s brand new full frame, 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens (available at Amazon, and B&H Photo). And it seems like Photozone (which is a great site by the way) liked it:
The Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED N
is a phenomenal lens. It is the sharpest ultra-wide angle lens tested to date. The resolution figures are simply stunning and unprecedented specifically at 14mm and that’s straight from the maximum aperture setting. So far it is the only lens in this class which has the potential to scale beyond the pixel-density of 10mp APS-C sensors. And it doesn’t even stop here - distortions and lateral CAs are very well controlled and vignetting is basically a non-issue in field conditions. Naturally even this Nikkor
is not perfect in the true sense - it can flare quite a bit with streaking light sources and the bokeh can look a little rough although that’s quite typical for lenses featuring aspherical elements. The build quality is exceptionally high and in line to the professional grade scope of the lens. The immense front element may be responsible for the superb performance but it prohibits front filters leaving the protruding front element is quite vulnerable - a bit of a worrisome thought regarding the high value of this lens. Nonetheless - taking the sum of its qualities into account the verdict can only be … highly recommended!

Oh o ho! very nice site!
Hi Review was very helpfull
Right now I have a Nikon D200 with a 18 200mm & I want to go wider would you say having the
Nikon AF 14-24mm F2.8 G ED AF-S Super Wide Angle Zoom Nikkor is a good way to go.
Many thank’s
Steve
Well Steve, it depends.
The biggest question is do you plan on upgrading you D200 eventually to a full frame sensor body like the Nikon D700
? If you do plan on moving up to a 35mm sensor size, then you should be buying 35mm glass now for later. If you want to stick the D200
/ D300
camera, then I would say it’s probably not the right choice for you. Since those cameras use the smaller APS sized sensor, your Nikon 14-24mm Wide Angle Lens
will only get you as wide as an equivalent 21mm.
A much better choice for the Nikon D200
and D300
camera would be Nikon’s own 12-24mm f/4G ED IF DX Nikkor
, Sigma’s 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon
or even Tokina’s excellent AT-XAF124DXN 12-24mm Wide-Angle Lens for Nikon
. But if you really want the fast f/2.8 aperture, then you only choice right now is the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Lens.
